ThermaCELL® Mosquito Repellent
Mosquitoes are a part of life especially in the top end and the potential answers are everywhere nowadays. Many like Bushman's, Rid and Aeroguard work but who really wants to keep spraying DEET (the active ingredient) on themselves. The higher the percentage of DEET the stronger they are. I will always use Bushman's here in the Territory's Top End but apart from the fact you have to spray yourself regularly - putting these chemicals on your skin - there is also the corrosive nature of this, and most sprays can destroy plastic and paint. The lack of paint on my tripod is a result of Bushman's being on my hands almost constantly during use.
Very corrosive stuff and we spray it on ourselves. In moderation it doesn't cause a problem - so we are told, but is there another option.
Since they arrived in the Northern Territory some 8 or so years ago I have used the ThermaCELL® and always have one close by. This one of mine has travelled to all corners of the Territory in the back of my car for some 6 or 7 years.
What is it?
ThermaCELL® Mosquito Repellent is powered by a single butane cartridge generating heat which is directed to a metal plate. On the plate you place a small repellant saturated pad containing allethrin. Allethrin is a synthetic analog (chemical copy) of a naturally occurring insecticide, pyrethrin, found in the pyrethum flower, a member of the chrysanthemum family. The synthetic copy is saturated into the pad and when heated is released. Being a knock down pesticide it kills the mosquitoes rather than just deter them to another feeding source. It repels mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums, and will not harm humans or pets.
The advantage of the ThermaCELL® is it does an area rather than just an individual, and can cover about 20 square meters. Great for those outdoor activities like BBQ's, or even place one in the boat whilst fishing.
Once you have purchased the initial unit you can just buy the refill packs of butane canisters, and repellant pads. The new units are quite flash and modern looking compared to my well used one above.
One of my favourite ways to use the ThermaCELL® is when photographing sunrise or sunset on the banks of a mosquito plagued billabong here in the top end. I put the unit beneath my tripod and it keeps my working zone mozzie free. Once the unit has warmed up, then moving to a new location is ok as it quickly knocks the mozzies down creating that barrier in the new area. It is very easy to know when the pad is running low as the odd mozzie will start to bite. Change the pad and you are good to go again.
