About Osteoderms

On one of my many visits to Yellow Water in Kakadu National Park I captured this different image of a saltwater crocodile. It was late afternoon and the light produce was quite erie as the air was heavy with smoke but not ideal for long distance images. I was lucky enough to be presented this situation where the light was catching the osteoderms on the back of this large and very dark saltie. Osteoderms are bone deposits within the scales of the saltwater crocodile and serve the purpose of carrying the heated blood back to the rest of the body when they lay basking in the sun to warm up.
