The Limmen Bight Coast is one of the most remote and inaccessible coastlines in the NT and it also borders one of the most fragile marine ecosystems. In 2015-2016 the largest mangrove dieback event ever recorded devastated over 1000km of coastline in the gulf of Carpentaria. In fact, this actual area was a dense mangrove forest but now there is no evidence a mangrove ever lived there. In the shallow seas off the coastline large seagrass paddocks grow providing the only food a dugong eats. These seagrass beds are pivotal to the future of the dugong. This piece reminds me that the environment has its own checks and balances and even they get mixed up at times and cause irreversible damage to the environment. Industry in such fragile areas can only enhance the negative environmental pressures on the area.
